Frederic C. Trenor worked as a melting metallurgist for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation from 1965 through 1967 specializing in the melt production of stainless and silicon steels. From 1967 through 1972 he worked for Koppers Company as a patent clerk, patent agent and patent attorney in such diverse fields as metallurgy, coke oven technology, box-making machinery, plastics and polymers, environmental protection devices for the steel industry and wood treatment preservatives. He authored over 25 patents while serving with Koppers Company and drafted numerous licensing and franchising agreements involving patents and trademarks.
In 1972 Mr. Trenor joined Meyer Darragh Buckler Bebenek and Eck as an associate and he eventually became an equity partner in 1978. During his career at Meyer Darragh Mr. Trenor worked in various litigation fields including trade secrets and trademarks, immigration and deportation, surety bonds, will and estate contests, general liability, workers’ compensation and employer liability. At Meyer Darragh, Mr. Trenor was chairman of the workers’ compensation group.
In 1988 Mr. Trenor along with seven other former Meyer Darragh partners founded Zimmer Kunz where again he was chairman of the workers’ compensation practice.
In 1997 Mr. Trenor joined Margolis Edelstein as chairman of the workers’ compensation practice in western Pennsylvania.
Mr. Trenor has an extensive appellate law practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the Superior Court and the Commonwealth Court. Some of his significant decisions changing workers’ compensation law include:
Commercial Credit Claims v. Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board (Lancaster) 556 Pa. 325, 728 A.2d 902 (Pa 1999) ...absolving employers of the burden in Termination Petition proceedings of proving that other injuries not accepted as compensable injuries by the employer are not work related.
Hastings Industries v. Commonwealth 531 Pa. 186, 611 A.2d 1187 (Pa 1992)...changing long established law that the award for facial disfigurements is a question of fact to a question of law so that appellate bodies have the right to view a facial disfigurement and change the award of the number of weeks.
Myers Commercial Union Assurance Companies 506 Pa. 492, 485 A.2d 1113 (Pa 1984)...in a conflict of laws issue regarding subrogation and reimbursement claims, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court that Pennsylvania law applied over Illinois law because it had “more significant contacts”.
Kline v. Arden H. Verner Company 503 Pa. 251, 469 A.2d 158 (Pa 1983)...affirmation of the employers’ immunity from a lawsuit in a workers’ compensation matter even if the specific injury is not compensable under the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act.
Education:
Mr. Trenor graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgy and earned his Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University School of Law in 1970.
